Health warning - C Green
30th Jan, 2012

I have just stayed 10 days at Waikanae top 10 in Gisborne. The management and staff (particularly the cleaners) are lazy disgusting pigs. One of the toilet blocks (Male with 6 basins) had one soap dispenser which despite regular complaints from numerous campers remained empty for a 48 and 72 hour period. Several families were struck down with Gastroenteritis with one camper hospitalised (me). The cleaners were seen to use a towel wrapped around a handle as a mop to clean the floors in the female toilet and when finished they used it in the men’s toilet then hung it back up next to a basin in the women`s toilet to dry (no, it wasn`t laundered).
he manager talked to me about it and undertook to install an extra dispenser after I had distributed bars of soap to all of the basins and his staff (to show them what they looked like) on day 3 of the 72 hour period (without soap in dispenser). The manager lied to me when he told me that he had just replaced the soap refill and that he had found a second empty container in the bin (he claimed was emptied by the cleaners that morning) which indicated (to him) that it had been changed already that morning. I knew this was not true but went and checked it out anyway. Yes he put a new refill and extra dispenser in but there was only the one empty container in the bin and it had rubbish in it which I had placed there 2 days earlier. He told a pointless lie to try to make me feel as if I was being unreasonable or had got it wrong. I will never assume that a top 10 site is any better than the worst camp site again.

Additionally they charged me and another family $10 each for security swipe card (I paid $50 for 5) which we were told would be refunded in full when the cards were returned. When returned they denied that we paid $10 for each card and would only refund $10 for all five cards. I kept the cards and informed them as to their thieving heritage
am terribly disappointed in the experience and will be telling everyone I know that membership of the Top ten franchise is no assurance of quality or amenity.

Great place to stay.. - John W

Like nearly all Top10, this place was clean, modern, bright, friendly staff, everything works, a little pricey but your at the top end of camping grounds. Highly recommended. Close to town, walks, beach.

Clean but noisy - Kay Young

Well run, friendly and clean but beside a VERY noisy road. We had our worst ever night camping, with large noisy trucks running all night close by. We had planned to stay 2 nights but only lasted one.
