Happy Camping Review

Nelson is a vibrant, pleasant town, well positioned as a base for day trips to the Golden Bay and the national parks. It's one of the sunniest locations in New Zealand and is a very popular holiday destination for many Kiwis. Nearby suburbs Stoke and Richmond are worth visiting, with their own art galleries and many shops. Tahunanui is itself a very popular destination, with the area flooded with visitors each summer and the huge beach packed with people.

Tahuna Beach Holiday Park is positioned adjacent to the beach at Tahunanui, and is the biggest camping site pretty much on this side of the world. Covering 55 acres, it has over 600 sites, and many different types of cabins. The site is separated into sections, each of which have their own facilities block, and the site has many mature trees.

Positioned right next to the beach, the site is also close to many worthy activities, including a water park, BMX park, shops, restaurants and even has it's own mini-golf onsite. Locally I'd recommend checking out the local restaurants, which include Hot Rock, a gourmet pizza restaurant that serves excellent locally brewed beers.

The site facilities are excellent, with big spacious kitchen and toilet / shower rooms. Everything is modern and clean, and the atmosphere on site is very pleasant. There is wireless internet as well as kiosks in the kitchen, along with a very handy coffee machine. There are a few ducks that live in the park, which in my book is always a plus point. The park also has a cool exercise route around the edge of the site, each stop advising a different exercise. Perhaps a good way to get the kids out of one's hair for a while. The one downside to the park's location is the overhead planes that pass over quite regularly from the early hours of the morning.

Overall it's a very impressive site that has a lot to offer, and is a very pleasant base for a visit to Nelson and the surrounding areas. It's very family friendly, and worth a visit. If arriving in summer, do check availability in advance as it can be very popular.

horrible place - williams
13th Jan, 2014

Me and my husband come to stay cause we were told it was an awesome place. So we packed our things in the car and off to Nelson we go. That was one of the worst mistakes we ever made. When we complained to the owner bout the state of the toilets off the mess. Shortly later there was a knock at the door. I answered it only to be greeted by the owner and her entourage. 1st of all we got threatened then told if we didn`t like it we were to f#* k off plus a few other words. They were also coming back. I was so terrified of the owner and her mafia that me and my husband left 1 hour of their confrontation . I just wanted out of there. It was the 1st time we had been to Nelson and will be the last. What a horrible place Nelson Tahuna Motor camp is. Be warned people go there at your own risk.

To the owner who the hell do you think you are telling my niece. She`s too young. You didn`t mind taking her money the first night. Her father comes down to find out what`s happening and you surround yourself with guys as if her father was gonna cause trouble. Maybe I should pay you a visit with my guys see how you like it. I also work for the Nelson evening mail it will be in the paper what you did. I also work with a company that have dealings with people like you. You are a disgrace to the hospitality field and should not be part of it. I will pass this on to my boss and you will be hearing from us.what a dishrace

Basic cabins - Tamar
26th Apr, 2008

Stayed in the basic cabins. Was very noisy with other long term residents in the cabins next to us.
It was also quite a hike to the toilets - especially at night. The cabins had a fridge though which was very handy.
I didn`t feel the staff were very helpful. They didn`t make it clear you can`t check in until 2pm so when we arrived at 10 or so we were pretty stuck.
Is a great place for kids though. Mini golf is really cheap and there`s mini jeeps and things also very cheap.
Beautiful area and so many restaurants and bars around. Tahuna Beach is lovely and we had some nice walks.
Showers and toilets were clean.
Next time we would camp - I wouldn`t stay in the basic cabins again.
