Nelson is a vibrant, pleasant town, well positioned as a base for day trips to the Golden Bay and the national parks. It's one of the sunniest locations in New Zealand and is a very popular holiday destination for many Kiwis. Nearby suburbs Stoke and Richmond are worth visiting, with their own art galleries and many shops. Tahunanui is itself a very popular destination, with the area flooded with visitors each summer and the huge beach packed with people.
Tahuna Beach Holiday Park is positioned adjacent to the beach at Tahunanui, and is the biggest camping site pretty much on this side of the world. Covering 55 acres, it has over 600 sites, and many different types of cabins. The site is separated into sections, each of which have their own facilities block, and the site has many mature trees.
Positioned right next to the beach, the site is also close to many worthy activities, including a water park, BMX park, shops, restaurants and even has it's own mini-golf onsite. Locally I'd recommend checking out the local restaurants, which include Hot Rock, a gourmet pizza restaurant that serves excellent locally brewed beers.
The site facilities are excellent, with big spacious kitchen and toilet / shower rooms. Everything is modern and clean, and the atmosphere on site is very pleasant. There is wireless internet as well as kiosks in the kitchen, along with a very handy coffee machine. There are a few ducks that live in the park, which in my book is always a plus point. The park also has a cool exercise route around the edge of the site, each stop advising a different exercise. Perhaps a good way to get the kids out of one's hair for a while. The one downside to the park's location is the overhead planes that pass over quite regularly from the early hours of the morning.
Overall it's a very impressive site that has a lot to offer, and is a very pleasant base for a visit to Nelson and the surrounding areas. It's very family friendly, and worth a visit. If arriving in summer, do check availability in advance as it can be very popular.
