Well established camp ground surrounded by stands of native trees andbordering the Buller River. Great swimming and fishing within campgrounds. Sit by the river on the deck of our new licensed cafe andenjoy the serenity. We are the centre of NZ for kayaking 10 differentruns within 20 mins drive.

Happy Camping Review

Murchison is a small farmer's service town, and is known for fishing, rafting and kayaking. The Buller river is popular with the rafters, as well as providing opportunities for trout fishing. The town itself has little to see, with a museum providing information about its gold rush history, a couple of cafes, garages and a 4 Square. It's surrounded by mountains, and many mountain bike trails. The site offers bike rental for this purpose.  Alternatively, you can try your hand at gold panning. Pans can be rented from the visitor's centre. The visitor centre can also advise on the many rafting options available.

The River View Holiday Park is an old site situated just outside the town, next to the river. It's a large site, divided up into cabin and camping areas. The camping area has plenty of spacious, powered sites, as well as sheltered tent sites among lots of mature trees. The site has it's own cafe, which offers a range of snackish food and drinks by the river.

The facilities are quite old but in reasonable shape, with basic kitchen and toilets (bring your own soap and towel). Showers are $2 for 6 miserly minutes. The site is lined by the highway, which can be a little disruptive. Being next to the river, you would be well advised to remember the insect repellent.

All in all, this is a basic, unremarkable site and well worth visiting if you plan on getting out onto the river, or as a base for biking in the mountains.

The Best Kayakers Campsite in NZ - Steve
7th Jun, 2011

This is THE campsite for meeting kayakers. Just turn up, meet others with boats and paddle the amazing rivers all round.

If you come over Christmas and New Year, you`ll hook up with dozens of boaters, and will be all set for a trip down to the West Coast... if you`re good enough!

Quite quiet after mid February (except for the Buller Fest weekend) there are lots of kayakers who stay around for most of January, so you`ll meet people to go paddling with every day.

ENJOY!

A great spot by the river, awesome if you are into kayaking or fishing but the camp is pretty dissapointing, not very clean and the facilities are well average.
