Set in parklike surroundings. A friendly park which is handy to excellent trout fishing on the famous Mataura River. Guides available. Close to town and central to Queenstown, Te Anau, Invercargill and the Catlins area for day trips. Washing Machine.
Located on the edge of Southland farming town Gore (brown trout capital of the world), Gore Motor Camp is a large, well run site with a range of self-contained units, van sites and tent sites. The site was built in the 50s and has been managed by Donald and Margaret Rae since 2001, the third private owners of the park. New hosts are scheduled to take over at the end of March. The park is large, spacious, and full of beautiful mature trees. The facilities block is located at the centre of the park, with cabins nearby and some powered sites, and the rest of the powered and tent sites arranged around the edge. A large play area for kids is included, within sight of the facilities block.
Roads run along two sides of the park, and a railway line along the third. I stayed on the side nearer the entrance, and found the road quieter than the dual carriageway on the other side. It is worth noting that trains may pass the site as early as 6am, as I found out to my surprise.
Located within walking distance of the town centre, ice skating rink and swimming pool, as well as the Matuara River, which is a popular choice among anglers. The site is also a popular location for people wishing to take day trips to Te Anau, Queenstown, Catlins Coast, Dunedin and Central Otago. Many also visit the Eastern Southland Art Gallery, famous for the artwork of Dr. John Money, Rita Angus, Theo Schoon and Ralph Hotere, along with various temporary exhibitions.
The facilities were totally revamped in 2001, and are in decent shape. With a fully featured, if vintage, kitchen, laundry and toilets. The kitchen includes utensils, stove, grill, microwave and kettle, along with a TV and sofa in the corner. The toilets include hand soap and paper towels, along with generously sized shower cubicles. All the facilities are clean and well presented.
I found the Gore Motor Camp a nice place to stay. There is a genuinely park-like feel to the grounds, and a nice relaxed atmosphere. I didn't even mind much having a train pass by in the early hours, and I'm sure had I stayed there another few days, I wouldn't even notice.
