Collingwood is a quiet gold rush town, and is Golden Bay's northernmost settlement. Situated between the sea and Ruataniwha Inlet, the town consists mainly of one street containing a general store, several cafes, a pub and a small museum.

The town is a base for those interested in the Farewell Spit tours and the Heaphy Track. Also worth seeing are the Devil's Boots and Te Anaroa Caves. The site owners are very helpful and will be able to put you on the right track for a day out.

The Collingwood Motor Camp used to be council-run, but in the last two years has been renovated under new management. The park is located right next to the beach, and the tide comes in to within a couple of metres of the tree-lined edge of the site. While the inevitable sandflies can be an irritation, I didn't find them too big an issue, and the quiet waves lapping near by was very serene and pleasant. The entrance faces the main street, and is extremely easy to find.

The motor camp is laid out in a parklike manner, with curved roads and powered sites along the edge of the sea and around the facilities block. This contains a TV room, kitchen, internet terminals, and a separate ablution block. The quality of the facilities is pretty good, with the TV room being cosy and tidy, the kitchen is clean and provides all the needed cooking equipment, and the toilets are reasonable. It's a good idea to take your own soap into them however as the provided "hand sanitiser" stuff is one of those "no rinsing required" things that I'm not crazy about.

The site is pet friendly, with some basic rules about keeping your dog under control, and an onsite cat slinks around, providing entertainment for any dogs onsite. Overall the Collingwood Motor Park is a decent, quiet camp site that would suit people looking for somewhere a little out of the way to chill. It has some permanent residents but they don't impose too badly, and the overall atmosphere on the site is good.

Dog friendly thumbs up! - Erena Chris and Zion
19th Oct, 2011

My partner and I stayed at this holiday park a couple of years ago with our dog Zion. Zy is part of the family and we were delighted to find a holiday park that permits pets. This is such a kiwi "down to earth" attitude. I admire the relaxed, caring, laid back atmosphere of the place. Some of the permanent residents gave us cockles and the views were stunning. What a little slice of paradise! Our time spent there was the most memorable part of our trip! Thumbs up! I`m hoping you have space for us this year, with our two new additions - part Chihuahua Boo and Ubo (Curlymo and Tai). P.S. Zion lives with his dad now in Akaroa

One eyed - Dudz
7th May, 2011

stayed at camp october 2008. Whitebaiting for 4 days. Locals left nets and other gear by the estuary inlet. we were advised by camp mother diane to leave them alone and not interfere. Got there early one morning and got pushed out. went around by the jetty and got a few good shoals. if you not a local, then fish elsewhere. never went back under her one eyed regime.

Couldn`t ask for friendlier people - Steph Everett
14th Jan, 2011

We stayed at the camp for three weeks and I must say that Diane and Brian McKenna made our stay most enjoyable. Nothing was a problem, and they went out of their way to make sure that we were comfortable. Would thoroughly recommend a stay at the Collingwood Motor Camp!
